Anyone who knows me well, will also know how much I LOVE food (and wine).
So, it was a pretty awesome to be invited for lunch at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant

The name of the restaurant was inspired by La Motte’s admiration of Pierneef that dates to early 2002, with the creation of the estate’s premium, Pierneef wine Collection. Ever since, Pierneef’s love for that which is truly South African, as well as his passion for his art are echoed in more than just the name of this wine collection and the estate’s Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant. There is also a strong synergy between La Motte and Pierneef with reference to a love for the South African landscape and nature as well as an interest in the preservation of architecture.

We were seated at a stunning outdoor table with a view that captured the elegance of the restaurant but also showcased the beautiful landscapes of the estate.

We started off with a delicious bottle of La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc. The wine shows intense lemon, melon and green apple flavours complemented by aromas from the natural flora (‘fynbos’) in its habitat. It was a perfect fit for my Melon & Watermelon Salad and the Roasted chicken served with savoury potato “plaatkoekies”, celery-and-pear chutney.

I have learned during our lunch that the majority of the restaurant’s vegetables and herbs are grown on the estate itself and dishes served in Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant are based on recipes used and modified in the Cape Winelands over more than three centuries.

Moving on to the main course. From the 7 mains, we selected 3 options; the Mushroom ravioli served with honey and rosemary roasted pumpkin, Karoo lamb with and potato emulsion, lemon and biltong rissole, new season greens with pickled onion and almond salad and then slowly cooked duck breast. The food was absolutely exquisite and met all expectations, but what took my breath away, was the intensely delicious Hanneli R wine with blackberry and mulberry fruit undertones, as well as cinnamon and black pepper spices.

From the moment we entered La Motte, we were whisked away into another world. The meals were exquisite: beautifully presented, delicious and with excellent service.

The Cape winelands are blessed with some of the finest restaurants South Africa has to offer and after my visit to La Motte, I can honestly say that it was one of the best lunches I have had so far.
